Affordable Health Insurance

June 19, 2007

It can be easy to rationalize not having health insurance when you are young and in good health. After all, who really wants to spend the money? Health insurance rates can be outrageous. Affordable health insurance is rare in this country. When you have never gotten seriously ill in your entire life, shelling out at least 200 dollars a month can seem like a big waste. Nonetheless, it is important that you make sure to get health insurance coverage. If your luck changes, you will be glad that you did!

I have a friend who couldn’t find affordable health care. You see, there were a number of risk factors in her family history. Several of her aunts and uncles, as well as her own mother were victims of heart disease. In her own case, she had had not had good health when she was a kid, which kept her health insurance rates high. As a result of this, affordable health insurance was almost impossible for her to find. But she was in good health, so she decided not to get any health care coverage at all. Then tragedy struck.

She was struck by a hit-and-run driver one day and suffered major injuries. Although they got her into stable condition pretty quickly, it would take months and months - if not years - for her to recover. The hospital provided the immediate crisis treatment, but because she did not have affordable health insurance, they would not cover some of her long-term needs. As a result, she would have to go without the treatment that she so desperately needed. Fortunately, she was able to raise some of the money from friends and family. Nonetheless, because she had neglected to keep affordable health insurance, she had to go into massive debt to treat her injuries.

It would be nice to make health insurance affordable for all people. Most countries in the world - at least most rich industrialized countries - provides health insurance for all of their citizens and visitors. Unfortunately, in America, there is not affordable health insurance for everyone. This means that you have to make health insurance a priority for yourself and your family. It can seem like a waste of money, but when tragedy strikes you will be glad that you took action. Getting affordable health insurance is one of the most important things that you can do to keep your family safe.
