Insomnia is defined as chronic lack of sleep. A patient of insomnia may not sleep at all, or get very short bouts of good sleep. Insomnia indicates difficulty in sleep. One should take sleeping tablets only if other treatments do not show any results. If you are being treated with drugs for treating Insomnia, you should avoid driving in day, as few drugs may cause day long drowsiness.
There are some other side effects of these medicines. Some sedatives may cause dry mouth, urinary retention, confusion, vivid dreams etc. Sedatives are used to induce sleep in patients. Trazodone is also extremely popular for treatment of Insomnia. Some patients feel nauseous, muscle twitching, numbness etc. Libido and male erection is also affected by Trazodone. Elavil, Desyrel, Sinequan are primarily used as sedatives, to treat Insomnia. These drugs work best when Insomnia is the effect of depression. Primary Insomnia may also be treated by these drugs.There are few herbal treatments available for treatment of Insomnia. Melatonin is most popular amongst these.
Kava Kava, Valerian are considered effective medicines for treatment of chronic sleeplessness. Some of these herbal remedies have not been proven conclusively beneficial in lab tests. It is advised that insomnia medication should be taken only by taking advice of doctor. Insomnia can be treated by behavioral changes and medicines.
